The breaker ring is used to reduce and control the pressure that the sealing rings see in
higher pressure applications. Reduced pressure leads to longer life and more efficient sealing
of the active packing rings. The breaker ring has clearance designed into it to accomplish
this funtion. It also throttles the pressure on the suction stroke.
